Augmented and virtual reality (AR and VR) are poised to change our world in ways that are just now being discovered. Building on its new $150M Iribe Center for Advanced Computing, two new endowed chairs in AR/VR, the recently launched MAVRIC (Mixed/Augmented/Virtual Reality Innovation Center) Maryland is poised to be at the forefront of these massive changes. Already, the University is working on multiple fundamental technologies and applications for next-generation virtual and augmented reality.UMD is developing technologies in multiple areas: scene understanding; object tracking and registration; multimodal rendering; machine intelligence; and interfaces and usability. Applications under development at UMD include medical training and real-time augmentation, next generation journalism applications, the use of VR for autism education, and athletic injury avoidance and mitigation.
