EcoMap Technologies Welcomes VP of Engineering

The ecosystem intelligence AI software company elevates technical decision-making with new expert hire

Baltimore [4/16/24]—EcoMap Technologies (EcoMap), a category-defining ecosystem intelligence AI software company, today announced the appointment of Ed Schmalzle as Vice President of Engineering. Schmalzle brings a wide range of experience in technical leadership and decision-making across industries.

In this role, Schmalzle will grow EcoMap’s processes and implementations to enable the company's technology to scale and meet the needs of current and future customers.

“The team at EcoMap is young, scrappy and ambitious,” Schmalzle said, “and I identified strongly with the mission. What we are doing is important and the energy around the work is palpable. As someone with a background in community building within the Baltimore tech scene, I’m eager to take this incredible foundation in terms of what the product is and bring that to life in a new way that’s better able to meet the needs of our customers.”

Prior to EcoMap, Schmalzle served as VP of Engineering for WholesomeCo Cannabis, a Utah cannabis operation, building their tech-first e-commerce platform from scratch. He was the first engineering leader to build something of this kind for the cannabis marketplace in Utah. His prior experience at Leafly was a major contributing factor to his success.

At Leafly, Schmalzle served as VP of Platform Strategy, part of the executive leadership team that contributed analysis and insight on mission-critical decisions while also delivering technical, product, and business opportunity scoping for all partnerships.

Schmalzle came to Leafly by way of OrderUp. In 2012, Schmalzle co-founded Back Forty, a consultancy firm that advised clients on technical business solutions. After just two years, OrderUp acquired the company to have Schmalzle scale its tech team, leading up to its acquisition of Groupon.

“Ed brings a unique perspective across the board in the ways he has approached tech in different industries,” Sherrod Davis, co-founder and CEO of EcoMap, said. “He has experience building and advising companies from early stage to established. But he is also a lifelong learner. I see him bringing the perfect balance of technical knowledge but openness to innovation that EcoMap needs to take us to the next level.”
